Description
The HP 17A (CF217A) and the Canon CRG-047 (2164C001) are identical twins in terms of their mechanical build and inner chemistry. They are designed for the ultra-compact, entry-level monochrome laser engines co-developed by HP and Canon.
Unlike older legacy desktop laser printers that used integrated all-in-one cartridges, this engine generation utilizes a split architecture. The toner supply is housed in a slim, lightweight tube, while the OPC drum and developer parts are housed in a completely separate, long-life imaging frame.
1. Complete System Compatibility Matrix
These cartridges cross-reference perfectly across both brands’ compact hardware lineups:
HP Sub-Models (using 17A / CF217A):
-
LaserJet Ultra M106w / M134fn
-
LaserJet Pro M102w / M102a
-
LaserJet Pro MFP M130a / M130nw / M130fn / M130fw
Canon Sub-Models (using CRG-047):
-
imageCLASS LBP113w
-
imageCLASS MF113w
2. Technical Specifications & Yield Data
While the physical plastic shells, internal doctor blades, and toner powder compositions are interchangeable, the tracking smart chips are unique to each brand. You cannot slide an HP 17A cartridge with an HP chip directly into a Canon printer without swapping the microchip first, and vice versa.
| Feature | HP 17A Variant | Canon CRG-047 Variant |

3. The Separate Maintenance Item (The Drum Unit)
Because these are split-system machines, replacing the toner cartridge will not resolve print quality defects caused by a scratched, dented, or worn-out imaging cylinder. If your printouts display repeating black dots, light vertical lines, or a gray background haze, you need to replace the independent drum frame:
-
For HP LaserJet Pro M102w Series: Requires the HP 19A Drum Unit (CF219A), rated for approximately 12,000 pages.
-
For Canon imageCLASS LBP113w/MF113w: Requires the Canon Drum Cartridge 049 (2165C001), rated for approximately 12,000 pages.
4. Component-Level Sourcing & Aftermarket Info
For component assembly, cartridge remanufacturing, or sorting parts bins:
-
The Toner Powder: This engine relies on a specialized, high-flow chemical toner powder. Using older, legacy HP monochrome powders (like 12A or 85A) will result in faint, faded printouts and heavy background leaking into the waste hopper.
-
The Microchip: If you are configuring aftermarket cartridges for e-commerce or distribution, the physical toner bottle shell can be mass-produced identically for both lines—only the target electronic smart chip needs to be designated for either the HP 17A or Canon 047 firmware pathway.
