HP Imaging unit P2000 Series (49A – 53A)

For the legacy HP LaserJet P2000 Series (specifically covering models like the P2014 and P2015), as well as their predecessors, HP utilizes an All-in-One cartridge architecture.

Unlike the Konica Minolta copiers that use separate toner bottles and independent drum units, these HP engines do not have a standalone imaging unit or separate drum frame. The OPC Drum (Organic Photoconductor), charging roller, cleaning blade, and toner hopper are entirely integrated into a single, disposable piece. Replacing the toner cartridge automatically replaces the entire imaging unit.

While the 49A and 53A share identical internal core components (like the internal green OPC drum cylinder and developer roller sleeve), they are housed in physically distinct plastic shells with unique side-keying guides to prevent them from sliding into the wrong machine.

1. HP 49A / 49X Family (Q5949A / Q5949X)

This cartridge design is intended for the earlier generation of mid-volume desktop laser printers.

Compatible Printer Models:

• LaserJet 1160 (Accepts 49A standard yield only)

• LaserJet 1320 / 1320n / 1320nt / 1320nw

• LaserJet 3390 / 3392 All-in-One

Technical Specifications:

• Standard Yield (49A / Q5949A): Approximately 2,500 pages (standard 5% coverage).

• High Yield (49X / Q5949X): Approximately 6,000 pages (features a deeper toner hopper belly; does not fit the LaserJet 1160).

2. HP 53A / 53X Family (Q7553A / Q7553X)

This revised chassis design was created specifically to match the upgraded speeds of the LaserJet P2000 hardware series.

• LaserJet P2015 / P2015d / P2015n / P2015dn / P2015x

• LaserJet M2727nf / M2727nfs MFP

Technical Specifications:

• Standard Yield (53A / Q7553A): Approximately 3,000 pages (standard 5% coverage).

• High Yield (53X / Q7553X): Approximately 7,000 pages (deeper physical hopper profiling; does not fit base P2014 models).

Cross-Brand Compatibility (Canon Equivalents):

Because HP and Canon co-developed these legacy print engines, these all-in-one cartridges cross-reference perfectly with specific Canon engines:

• HP 49A (Q5949A) is structurally identical to the Canon FX-9 / Canon CRG-708.

• HP 53A (Q7553A) is structurally identical to the Canon CRG-715.

Component-Level Remanufacturing Information:

For aftermarket builders, cartridge rebuilders, or technicians looking at component parts rather than the complete finished cartridge assembly:

• The OPC Drum Cylinder: The raw internal green aluminum OPC drum core is physically identical and completely interchangeable between the 49A and 53A cartridges.

• The Wiper Blade & PCR (Primary Charge Roller): These parts share identical dimensions and performance tolerances across both lines, allowing you to use the same component stock to rebuild or service either cartridge type.
